Hiriketiya
Peak surf season: November to April — best for beginners with smaller, easier waves and lighter winds.
Shoulder/other season: Even outside peak months, there can still be surfable days — but conditions are more variable, and intermediate/advanced surfers might enjoy it more.
✨ Tip: Early mornings often offer the cleanest conditions with fewer crowds and lighter winds.
Mirissa Surfing
Prime season: November to April — this is when the southwest swell brings consistent, cleaner waves and favorable winds for surfing.
Off-season (May–October): Waves can still appear, especially for stronger surfers, but conditions tend to be choppier and less consistent due to winds and seasonal shifts.
Daily tip: Early mornings often yield the smoothest, least crowded surf conditions.
Unawatuna
November–April: Dry season with consistent southwest swells and calmer winds; best for surfing in Unawatuna and along the south coast.
🌧️ May–October: Monsoon season can bring rougher seas and unpredictable conditions — surfable but more suitable for intermediate/advanced surfers or during clearer windows.
📍 Tip: Early morning sessions usually have smoother, cleaner waves before winds pick up.
Bentota Surfing
Prime period: November to March/April — during the southwest swell season, the ocean tends to be cleaner and waves more consistent.
Off‑season: You can still surf outside these months, but conditions are more variable and sometimes choppier.
Daily timing tips: Early mornings often offer the calmest winds and smoother waves.
Kalpitiya
Kalpitiya (North Western Province) is most famous as Sri Lanka’s kite‑ and wind‑surfing capital, thanks to reliable wind patterns and shallow lagoons — often called one of the top kite spots in Asia.
Main activity: Kitesurfing — wide lagoons with flat‑to‑choppy water make it ideal for beginners to advanced riders alike.
Wind conditions:
Summer season (May–October): Strong south‑west winds (15–30 kts), choppier sea with larger wind‑driven waves offshore.
Winter season (Dec–Mar): North‑west winds around 12–20 kts — gentler, good for beginners and learners.
Main playground: Kalpitiya Lagoon — shallow and flat, perfect for kitesurf lessons and freeride.
📍 Note: Kalpitiya is primarily a kiteboarding and windsurfing spot — if you’re thinking regular surfing (stand‑up on waves) the options are more limited than places like Mirissa or Arugam Bay.
Arugambay
Peak Surf Season:
April to September (with July & August often considered best) — winds are offshore in the morning, creating clean, long rides.
Shoulder/Quiet Season:
October–March is generally off‑season with less reliable waves, though beginners may still find small playful surf.
⛅ Water is warm year‑round (~27–29 °C) and Arugam Bay has a seasonal tropical climate.
Weligama
Peak surf season:
November to April — the dry season on the south coast brings more consistent southwest swells and cleaner waves.
All‑year riding:
Weligama’s sandy bay can work throughout the year for beginners, even outside peak months, as waves are often gentle and surfable.
Best tide & winds:
Works across low, mid, and high tides, with mid to high tide often best for long rides.
Early mornings usually have lighter winds and cleaner conditions.
