Knuckles Camping
The Knuckles Mountain Range (also called Dumbara Mitiyawatha) is a UNESCO World Heritage area with dense montane forests, waterfalls, grasslands, and multiple camping sites scattered along trekking routes. It’s well-known for multi-day hikes with overnight camping rather than just day trips
Horton Place Camping
Horton Plains National Park is a protected high-altitude reserve in Sri Lanka’s Central Highlands, renowned for its grasslands, cloud forest, and iconic viewpoints like World’s End and Baker’s Falls. While the park is mainly visited as a day-hiking destination, overnight camping inside the park is possible but tightly regulated.
Important: You cannot camp freely anywhere — camping is only allowed in designated campsites inside the park with prior booking and a permit from the Department of Wildlife Conservation
Rainforest Camping
Sinharaja Forest Reserve is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and World Heritage Site known for its dense tropical rainforest, rich biodiversity, and many endemic species of birds, mammals, insects, and plants.
🏕️ Camping Options
Official camping inside the reserve isn’t generally allowed due to strict conservation rules. However, organized camps and eco-tented experiences are available just outside or on the border of the forest area with tour operators and eco-camp providers.
Some tour companies (like Explorer by Mahoora) set up private safari-style tent camps near the rainforest boundary where you stay in spacious tents with comforts like bedroom space, en-suite bathroom, and veranda, yet still surrounded by nature sounds.
Luxury glamping options also exist with tents set up in the forest fringe that include BBQ nights, guided treks, waterfall visits, bird watching, and meals, though these are more glamping than traditional rough camping.
Bathalegala Camping
Batalegala, commonly called Bible Rock, is a distinctive rock formation (about 670–800 m high) near Aranayake. It got its English name during colonial times due to its resemblance to a book like a Bible.
Location: Hathgampola, Aranayake Division, Kegalle District, Sri Lanka.
Terrain: Flat-topped summit with 360° views of surrounding mountains and plains.
Hiking: Moderate trek suitable for most fitness levels; stone and concrete steps cover part of the route.
Idalgashinna Camping
Some travel sites list an Idalgashinna campsite as an attraction (with address and reviews), but this reflects either:
An informal camping area used by visitors rather than a government-regulated site, or
A locally hosted campground near the hilltop trails.
These might exist as remote camping spots, often with great high-country views, but you should confirm permission from landowners or local authorities before staying
Upper Diyaluma Camping
Upper Diyaluma refers to the higher pools and upper portion of Diyaluma Falls, one of Sri Lanka’s most scenic waterfalls near Koslanda (Badulla). Camping here means spending the night close to the waterfall and high-country streams, surrounded by lush hills and impressive views.
⛺ What It’s Like
The area around Upper Diyaluma is natural and rustic, perfect for nature lovers who want to sleep outdoors to the sound of falling water and experience a dramatic sunrise over the hills.
The campsite is typically near the river/upper pools, with panoramic views and limited facilities — so most groups use their own tents or go with organized camping packages that provide gear.
